Buying Guide for Animal Skin and Hides

This time of year always sees a popular rise in animal skin and hide sales.  The closing-in weather lays ground to more places in the home for soft furnishings that offer comforting warmth and texture.

Like most things in life, you get what you pay for – this rule of thumb is absolute here too.  We source all of skins by hand from a well-used and known supply channel were providence and quality are of the utmost importance.

All skins/hides have quality grading, from low to premium.  As follows:

Premium Quality
Hides are graded as premium quality if:

  • There is no evidence shedding
  • There is no evidence of holes
  • There is no evidence of insect scarring
  • There is no evidence of poor hair quality

Best Quality
Hides are graded as best quality if:

  • There is no evidence of shedding
  • There is evidence of the occasional hole, measuring approximately 2cm
  • There is evidence of the occasional scar or bald patch

Economy Quality
Hides may be graded as economy quality if:

  • There is evidence of light shedding
  • The hide is moderately misshapen
  • There is evidence of multiple holes
  • There is evidence of scarring or bald patches

Low Quality
Hides may be graded as low quality if:

  • There is evidence of light shedding
  • The hides are heavily misshapen
  • There is evidence of large holes or bald patches
  • There is evidence of heavy scarring

All our skins and hides are of premium quality and come with a year guarantee.  Should they show any signs of deterioration whatsoever it will be replaced for free.

You should treat the wear of your skin with due consideration to the natural habitat of the animal.  For example, Reindeer skins tend to come from colder harsh climates so are not good in direct hot sunlight or on heated floors as they will likely deteriorate and shed.  In contrast, Cow skins are much more durable due to the fact they must often weather cold and hot climates.

There are several really good uses for skins/hides in the home that are guaranteed to add impact, warmth, texture and something different:

  • Rugs under coffee tables, in front of fires or in the kitchen
  • The backs of occasional chairs or sofas as additional comfort/warmth
  • Bedding for pets
  • Bedroom runners or bedside feet warmers
  • Bathroom mats
